I “see” lamps. I can see a rusty gear or a sterling silver creamer and I envision a lamp. Preserving as much of the original patina as possible, I clean, de-rust, polish, paint and any other steps the object needs and then design and construct a lamp.Everything about the lamp is new except the object it’s made from. In my humble basement, I have shelves of potential lamps, lots of supplies and all the tools I need to create.A master electrician taught me the basics of lamp-making. I have developed my own techniques such as painting sockets and other bits and pieces so that they ‘blend’ (you can’t put a shiny socket on a rustic piece!) The wooden bases that I use are custom made by a local woodworker who uses locally reclaimed wood from the Shenandoah Valley. Each lamp comes with vintage-style twisted cloth-covered wire and a reproduction Edison bulb.
